Description |
| While Pearson Yachts is well known in the marine marketplace for its popular series of racing and cruising sailboats, the company actually began operations back in the 1960s manufacturing a line of fiberglass powerboats in addition to its Alberg-designed sailboats. (Note that Pearson was one of the pioneers in fiberglass boat construction.) Operating from facilities in Portsmouth, Rhode Island, Pearson had achieved a leadership position in the sailboat industry when it reintroduced the Pearson 43 Motor Yacht in 1984—a makeover of a previous Pearson product designed for inland and coastal cruising. In 1987 the Hunt-designed Pearson 38 Convertible, a good-running deep-V built to high production standards, signaled Pearson’s further emergence into the rapidly growing powerboat market. The company’s sailboat business declined rapidly in the late 1980s, however, and Pearson Yachts ended operations in 1991. The “new” Pearson Yachts emerged in 2002 with the introduction of the True North 38, a fast family cruiser inspired by the traditional New England lobster boat. Now back in operation, Pearson is developing an expanding series of True North designs with an eye toward resuming its place as one of the country’s leading builders of quality yachts. |
