| Sea Ray was founded in 1959 by C.N. “Connie” Ray when he bought a small fiberglass shop in Detroit that made (among other products) a 16-foot family runabout. By the early 1960s Ray had concentrated on boatbuilding exclusively and was soon offering a growing line of small cruisers and sportboats. The 1970s saw Sea Ray emerge as a powerhouse in the pleasure boating industry, and by the early 1980s Sea Ray had become the second-largest production builder (behind Bayliner) in the industry. The past decade has seen Sea Ray evolve from an average-quality builder of affordably priced small and mid-size boats into one of the the nation’s premier full-line manufacturers of quality runabouts, sportboats, family cruisers, and motor yachts from 17 to 68 feet in length. Indeed, at peak production the company’s ten manufacturing facilities can turn out some 18,000 boats annually. Distributed worldwide, today’s Sea Ray boats are widely recognized for their contemporary design, rugged construction, and solid resale values. In 1986, Connie Ray sold Sea Ray to the Brunswick Corporation. Headquartered in Knoxville, Tennessee, Sea Ray employs more than 5,000 people, and the company is now approaching $1 billion in sale,s which makes it the world’s largest builder in terms of dollar volume. |
